Lake Minnetonka school districts, compared.

By CJ Norman, licensed Minnesota Realtor · Updated

  • Four public districts cover most of the Lake Minnetonka area: Westonka 277, Minnetonka 276, Orono 278, and Wayzata 284.
  • District boundaries do not follow city lines on this lake, so the school assignment must be verified address by address before writing an offer.
  • District choice affects price as much as lake proximity does in several of these communities.

For families relocating to the Lake Minnetonka area, the school district usually narrows the search before any house does. The complication is that district boundaries and city boundaries do not line up out here.

A single city can sit in two districts, and neighboring homes can feed different schools. This guide maps the general picture, but every address still needs verification.

Westonka Public Schools, District 277

Westonka serves the west end of the lake, including Mound, Minnetrista, Spring Park, and Navarre, with Mound Westonka High School as the district high school.

It is the smallest of the four by enrollment, and that is much of the appeal for families who want a smaller community feel. Home prices on the west end are generally more approachable than the north and east shores.

Minnetonka Public Schools, District 276

Minnetonka covers the south and east side of the lake, including Excelsior, Shorewood, Deephaven, Tonka Bay, Greenwood, and parts of Chanhassen, Victoria, and the city of Minnetonka.

It is a large, well-regarded district known for its language immersion and advanced programming. Housing in its lake communities spans a wide range, from in-town Excelsior homes to substantial shoreline properties.

Orono Public Schools, District 278

Orono serves the north shore communities, including Orono, Long Lake, Medina, Maple Plain, and Independence, with a consolidated campus setting.

This is a smaller district covering a large geographic area, with a mix of estate properties, acreage, and in-town homes in Long Lake and Maple Plain.

Wayzata Public Schools, District 284

Wayzata serves the northeast, including Wayzata, Plymouth, and portions of the surrounding communities. It is the largest of the four by enrollment.

The district's size brings a broad range of programs and activities, and housing spans everything from Plymouth townhomes to Wayzata Bay lakefront.

Verify the address, not the city

The boundary lines on this lake are genuinely unintuitive. Parts of Minnetonka, Minnetrista, Victoria, and Chanhassen sit in districts other than the one their city name suggests.

Use the district's own boundary lookup for the exact address, and confirm before an offer, not after. CJ Norman checks this for every family who names a district as a requirement.
